Our History: From the Streets of Kibera to Empowering a Nation
What started as a simple dream among young people in the heart of Kibera has grown into a powerful grassroots movement of empowerment, creativity, and transformation.
The Beginning – A Voice through Theatre (2012–2014)
In April 2012, a group of passionate youth came together to form the Kibera Vision Achievers Group (KVAG). Their mission was simple but impactful: use theatre and performance arts to promote peace, unity, and reconciliation in a community often divided by social tension and hardship. With nothing more than raw talent and determination, the group performed across slums, drawing attention to critical issues through music, drama, and social satire.
Turning Point – A Broader Mission (2015)
By early 2015, the group saw the need to expand its focus. The harsh realities faced by orphaned and vulnerable children in slums such as Kibera, Mathare, and Huruma called for urgent action. KVAG began shifting from performances to program-based community outreach—focusing on children’s talents, mentorship, and safe spaces for expression.
That same year, the group launched its first Kenya Children Homes Talent Show (KCHTS), bringing together children from various orphanages in Nairobi for a day of music, art, and celebration. This event sparked a new chapter—showcasing hidden talents while giving children hope and identity.
Expanding Impact – Reaching Beyond Nairobi
Driven by growing partnerships and increasing demand, KVAG expanded its reach beyond Nairobi to Kisumu and Mombasa, initiating programs in underserved communities across counties. Monthly visits to children’s homes under the “Tuungane Tuchungane” program became a regular outreach initiative, combining donations with talent discovery and confidence-building.
