The Story of Global Vision Achievers (GVA)

Our History: From the Streets of Kibera to Empowering a Nation

What started as a simple dream among young people in the heart of Kibera has grown into a powerful grassroots movement of empowerment, creativity, and transformation.

The Beginning – A Voice through Theatre (2012–2014)

In April 2012, a group of passionate youth came together to form the Kibera Vision Achievers Group (KVAG). Their mission was simple but impactful: use theatre and performance arts to promote peace, unity, and reconciliation in a community often divided by social tension and hardship. With nothing more than raw talent and determination, the group performed across slums, drawing attention to critical issues through music, drama, and social satire.

Turning Point – A Broader Mission (2015)

By early 2015, the group saw the need to expand its focus. The harsh realities faced by orphaned and vulnerable children in slums such as Kibera, Mathare, and Huruma called for urgent action. KVAG began shifting from performances to program-based community outreach—focusing on children’s talents, mentorship, and safe spaces for expression.

That same year, the group launched its first Kenya Children Homes Talent Show (KCHTS), bringing together children from various orphanages in Nairobi for a day of music, art, and celebration. This event sparked a new chapter—showcasing hidden talents while giving children hope and identity.

Expanding Impact – Reaching Beyond Nairobi

Driven by growing partnerships and increasing demand, KVAG expanded its reach beyond Nairobi to Kisumu and Mombasa, initiating programs in underserved communities across counties. Monthly visits to children’s homes under the “Tuungane Tuchungane” program became a regular outreach initiative, combining donations with talent discovery and confidence-building.

Rebranding to GVA – A National Vision (2020)

In March 2020, KVAG officially rebranded to Global Vision Achievers (GVA). The change reflected not only a broader geographical scope but also a deeper commitment to eradicating poverty through empowerment and capacity building. GVA was no longer just about performance—it became a platform for transformation across generations.

Responding to Crises – Compassion in Action

During critical times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, fire outbreaks, and other local disasters, GVA actively provided emergency food support, clothes, and emotional encouragement to affected families in Kibera and beyond. These humanitarian actions deepened its roots in the community, proving that GVA is both a cultural and social anchor.

Empowering Mothers – The Birth of MAMITO Centre

One of GVA’s most transformative projects is the MAMITO Centre (Mama Mimi na Mtoto), which provides education and vocational training for young mothers in Kibera. With a day-care facility built into the program, young women aged 16–20 can return to school or learn practical skills while their children are cared for—an innovation born from understanding local realities.

Uniting Through Music – PEASIC Festival

Another major success is the PEASIC Festival (Peace + Music), an annual event uniting over 1,000 youth through music, food, and dialogue. The festival promotes peacebuilding in slums and creates a safe space where young people from all backgrounds feel seen, heard, and included.

Why We Believe in Our Mission – Global Vision Achievers (GVA)

At Global Vision Achievers (GVA), we believe in our mission because it is rooted in the real needs, hopes, and potential of the communities we serve. From our beginnings as a youth theatre group in Kibera to our transformation into a national movement, our mission has remained clear: to identify, nurture, and market talents for socio-economic empowerment—and to prove that every life, when empowered, can shape a better future. We believe in our mission because we have seen it change lives. Through programs like the Kenya Children Homes Talent Show, Tuungane Tuchungane, and the MAMITO Centre, we have impacted hundreds of youth, children, and young mothers. We've seen children gain confidence through music, youth choose creativity over crime, and young mothers return to school while their babies are cared for in safe spaces. These are not just stories—they are evidence that our mission works. But we don’t do this alone. Our belief in the mission is strengthened by the trust and collaboration of our partners—from grassroots volunteers to established organizations like Fatuma’s Voice, Hare Krishna – Food for Life, and many local groups that continue to stand with us. Their support amplifies our reach and deepens our impact.

We also believe in our mission because donors and well-wishers continue to walk with us. Their contributions—whether financial, material, or technical—enable us to run talent shows, deliver food during emergencies, support children in orphanages, and build capacity for young people who would otherwise be forgotten. The impact is real: - Orphaned children have stepped onto national stages. - Young mothers have returned to school. - Slum communities have come together in peace festivals. - Local talents have been discovered, celebrated, and given a future. - We believe in our mission because we’ve seen what happens when you give someone a chance—they rise. At GVA, we don’t just run programs. We restore hope, spark transformation, and build leaders from the ground up. Our mission is not just a statement—it is a commitment we live out every day, in every slum, with every child, every mother, and every youth we serve.
